May 23, 2010 Molenbergnatie goes Green in Barcelona
The sun in the Spanish coastal city of Barcelona will soon do more than just shine on the beach and the countless faces on the Ramblas. Thanks to the installation of 25,000 m2 of solar panels on the Molenbergnatie España warehouse it will serve as a renewable source of energy for the Barcelona port area.
This prestigious project – with a ca. 5 million euro price tag – in collaboration with Consorcio de la Zona Franca, was recently given the green light. The roof of the Molenbergnatie España warehouse will be equipped with 4,620 state-of-the-art solar panels covering 25,000 m2. This makes it one of the first warehouses in the port area with a ‘solar sunroof’ of this size.
Established in 2009, the new Molenbergnatie logistics warehouse centralizes all logistics operations of the local Molenbergnatie partners under one roof. Molenbergnatie has complete control of the warehouse management. The new solar energy installation will generate an annual output of 1,797.00 kWh, representing a CO2 reduction of around 2,000 tonnes.
Molenbergnatie is well aware of the negative impact of CO2 on the environment. Together with its partners, Molenbergnatie constantly looks for different ways to reduce its carbon footprint and thus contribute to a better world.
The installation of 25,000 m2 of solar panels is merely a first step in a wide range of environmental projects and measures that will be initiated by Molenbergnatie. At the Antwerp site the complete truck fleet has already been replaced with Euro-5 trucks. In a next step the warehouses there will be additionally insulated and its roofs equipped with solar panels. A feasibility study is currently being conducted to implement the latter before the year’s end. Molenbergnatie is committed to putting its weight behind our planet!
