Nuts about nuts. Molenbergnatie celebrates National Nut Day, October 22nd

2019/10/22

The crunch in your morning granola, an original topping on a salad, the base of a delicious baklava: nuts make a guest appearance in many dishes, sweet or savoury. And on their own too they are absolutely yummy. What would a glass of cold beer be, for instance, without its side of peanuts?

Not surprisingly nuts have been part of the human diet for over 800,000 years. Especially during cold winter months, when their high fat content and their natural conservation (due to their hard exterior) made them the go-to food for people and animals. Still, nuts and their many benefits are often overlooked. That is why, in 2015, the Liberation Foods Company decided to devote October 22nd to these little treasures. Since then, ‘National Nut Day’ has been celebrating all things nut in the UK, the US and a growing number of other countries.

At Molenbergnatie we are nuts about nuts too. Walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios …  we have been storing them since our foundation. Recently, we have even had to enlarge our storage capacity for nuts, due to an increasing demand for this commodity. This is partly due to shifting eating trends, with plant-based diets and veganism becoming more popular. Nuts fit perfectly in these trends as they are not only delicious and versatile, but also great sources of fibre, protein and healthy fats, which have been proved to lower cholesterol levels. They furthermore contain various vitamins and minerals, and can be used to make a range of lactose-free ‘milk’ products. In a nutshell: small wonders, packing a big punch!

As one of the leaders in the industry, Molenbergnatie wants to celebrate the glorious nut too. That is why we are joining in on National Nut Day! On October 22nd we will be treating all employees to a delicious nut-filled breakfast and a masterclass on nuts by colleague – and INC Academia graduate – Vania Van Hove.

Do you want to contribute too? Post your own nutty moment on your social media with #nutday or #nationalnutday.

Nutty fact: Did you know that peanuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews and pine nuts aren’t actually true nuts, but seeds, fruits or legumes? They are classified as nuts because they share the same characteristics and health benefits as ‘true’ nuts, such as hazelnuts and walnuts.
